How we created a dynamic showcase at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre

The Brief: to create an engaging display of QUT’s Creative Industries graduate projects for Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

We were engaged by Indooroopilly Shopping Centre (ISC) in partnership with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to deliver their annual QUT Design Showcase. Where standout Creative Industries graduates could connect with wider audiences through displaying their innovative work in a public domain from January 17 through to February 7.

Indooroopilly asked us to assist with collating and displaying the works of over 50 student graduates from multiple disciplines within the Creative Industries faculty:

  • Fashion
  • Architecture
  • Industrial Design
  • Interactive & Visual Design
  • Interior Design
  • Landscape Design
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Animation
  • Dance

By combining complementary disciplines at each pod, we were able to showcase a dynamic mixture of digital and physical concepts around the centre.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on university studies, there were additional challenges in displaying their works. For example, the students were tasked with transitioning into a post-COVID reality by producing works that were suited to an online audience meaning that Drama, Music, Animation and Dance projects required plasma screens.  A 17m long structure in centre court housed six screens, each showcasing dynamic video content. The structure was further enhanced with custom decals, blade signage and a floor decal.

Students who produced physical artefacts were encouraged to bring them in to be displayed on plinths to complement their project board, providing a more vivid demonstration of their innovation. Eight Interactive & Visual Design, Visual Arts and Industrial Design projects were showcased in this format for the duration of the showcase.

Community Feedback

Feedback from customers and retailers was extremely positive. One retailer commented that multitudes of people were talking about the installations and asking questions about it,  and that it had brought a lot of colour and vibrancy to the centre.
